Quick answer

Galle is a Dutch-built colonial fort town on Sri Lanka's south coast, wrapped in 17th-century ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the walls are boutique hotels, galleries, cafes, the Dutch Reformed Church and a working lighthouse. Walking the ramparts at sunset is the classic Galle experience. Entry to the fort is free; the National Maritime Museum inside costs USD 5. The Southern Expressway puts Galle 2.5-3 hours from Colombo Airport.

Why go to Galle

Galle is the best-preserved European fortified town in Asia and one of the most walkable, quiet, atmospheric places on the Sri Lankan coast. Inside the walls it is a working neighbourhood, not a tourist enclave - people live there. Add a lighthouse, cricket at the fort ground, the seafront ramparts at sunset and a genuinely good restaurant scene, and it is where most travellers finish a Sri Lanka trip.

Best things to do in Galle

  1. Walk the ramparts at sunset - the full loop takes 90 minutes, catches Galle Lighthouse and the Flag Rock cannon and ends over the ocean.
  2. Wander the fort streets - Church Street, Pedlar Street and Leyn Baan Street have the best cafes, galleries and boutiques.
  3. Dutch Reformed Church (1755) - the original tombstones are still set into the floor.
  4. National Maritime Museum, inside the fort walls - the shipwreck and colonial-trade exhibits are worth an hour.
  5. Watch cricket at the Galle International Stadium if a match is on - the fort ramparts double as free seating.
  6. A cooking class in the fort - Galle has some of the best in the country.
  7. Day trip to Unawatuna (10 min) for the beach, or Mirissa (30 min) for whales in season.
