Quick answer

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site - a 200-metre volcanic-plug rock rising from the jungle, crowned with the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace and famous rock-cut frescoes. Entry costs USD 30, opens at 7am, and the climb takes about three hours including the museum, water gardens, Mirror Wall and Lion's Paw entrance. Arrive at opening to beat the heat and the tour groups.

RegionCultural Triangle
Recommended stayTwo nights. One is enough to climb Sigiriya but leaves no room for Pidurangala, Dambulla, Minneriya or the village tour - a rushed one-day stop misses most of what the area is about.
Best seasonYear-round. The Cultural Triangle sits in a relative rain shadow between the two monsoons. It is hottest from March to May, when climbs need to start at dawn.
Pair withAlmost every itinerary pairs Sigiriya with Dambulla, Kandy and Polonnaruwa. Add Anuradhapura if you have three or more nights in the Cultural Triangle.

Why go to Sigiriya

Sigiriya is the single most-photographed landmark in Sri Lanka for good reason. The rock itself, the 5th-century water gardens at its base and the frescoes halfway up the cliff face are extraordinary, but the site is also historically dense - it was briefly a royal capital and later a monastery. It is the anchor point of the Cultural Triangle and almost every serious Sri Lanka itinerary includes it.

Best things to do in Sigiriya

  1. Climb Sigiriya at 7am opening. Water gardens, Mirror Wall, frescoes, Lion's Paw entrance, summit palace ruins. Roughly 3 hours.
  2. Climb Pidurangala (USD 3) at sunset the day before. Twenty minutes up, spectacular view of Sigiriya itself from the neighbouring rock.
  3. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple 20 minutes away - five caves, painted ceilings, 153 Buddha statues, USD 10 entry.
  4. Village tour by bullock cart, canoe on the tank, and a home-cooked lunch. Genuinely good, not a tourist trap.
  5. From August to October, book a Minneriya or Kaudulla afternoon jeep safari for the wild elephant gathering.

How to get to Sigiriya

From Colombo Airport (CMB) the drive is about 165 km and takes 4 to 4.5 hours via Kurunegala and Dambulla. From Kandy the drive is 90 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours via Matale. Both are comfortable in a private car with the spice-garden stops. See the CMB to Sigiriya transfer page for full details.

How long does the Sigiriya climb take?

Allow about 3 hours for the full site: water gardens, the boulder gardens, the Mirror Wall, the fresco spiral staircase, the Lion's Paw entrance, the summit palace ruins and the descent. Fitter climbers do it in 90 minutes; taking time makes it more rewarding.

Is Sigiriya or Pidurangala better?

Do both if you can. Sigiriya is the UNESCO site with the frescoes, water gardens and palace ruins - historically and visually unmatched. Pidurangala is the neighbouring rock; the summit gives the best view of Sigiriya itself. Pidurangala at sunset then Sigiriya at dawn is the right sequence.

Can children climb Sigiriya?

Most children over about 6 manage it comfortably. There are 1,200 steps in total, some are open metal staircases attached to the cliff face, and there is a chest-high railing throughout. Younger children who are nervous of heights sometimes struggle with the middle section.
