Travellers from Italy typically spend 10-12 days in Sri Lanka, most often in the Dec-Mar window. One stop via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, typically 12-15 hours in total. Italy passport holders need a Sri Lankan ETA, applied for online before departure. Budget around EUR 1,600 - 3,000 per person. A private driver connects every region so you are not tied to trains or buses.
Why travellers from Italy choose Sri Lanka
Italian travellers come to Sri Lanka for the mix of ancient history, food and warm coastlines. Ten to twelve days with a private driver links the ruined cities of the Cultural Triangle with the tea hills and the beaches of the south.
Italian travellers respond to Sri Lanka's layered history - Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are ancient cities on a scale that genuinely compares with the classical sites Italians grow up around, and almost nobody in Europe knows they exist. Add a coastline, a food culture worth taking seriously, and a fort town at Galle, and the trip reads as a proper cultural journey rather than a beach holiday.

When travellers from Italy should visit
December to March for the driest classic route. August is a major Italian holiday month - those trips are routed to the east coast and Cultural Triangle.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, so there is no bad month - only a wrong region for the month. We shift your route toward whichever coast is dry for your dates. See all 12 months compared.

Food and dietary requirements
Sri Lankan cuisine is worth engaging with properly - it is coconut-based, complex and quite unlike Indian food. Vegetarian options are abundant. Seafood on the south coast is outstanding.
Practical tips for travellers from Italy
- Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are under-visited relative to Sigiriya and deserve a full day each if ancient history is your reason for coming.
- If you travel in August, plan the east coast and Cultural Triangle - the south coast is under monsoon then.
- Galle Fort is small enough to walk and beautiful at sunset - stay inside the walls.
- Espresso is widely available in Colombo and Galle but not in rural areas; Sri Lankan tea is the compensation and it is exceptional.
- Italian plugs do not fit. Sri Lanka uses Type D and G - bring a universal adapter.
