When Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, so there is a dry, sunny region almost every month of the year.

Quick answer

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because two monsoons hit opposite coasts. The southwest (Yala) monsoon brings rain to the west and south from around May to September; the northeast (Maha) monsoon brings rain to the east and north from around October to January. So pick your region by month rather than avoiding the country.

Two monsoons, opposite coasts

Unlike most destinations, Sri Lanka does not have one single high season. The southwest monsoon brings rain to the west coast, south coast and hill country roughly from May to September. The northeast monsoon brings rain to the east coast and north roughly from October to January. When one side is wet, the other is usually dry.

West and south coast (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa)

These beaches and the cultural hill country are at their driest and sunniest from about December to March, which is the busiest tourist window. Whale watching off Mirissa is also strong in this period.

East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay)

The east flips the calendar. May to September is the drier, brighter time for the east coast beaches and for Arugam Bay surf, while the west is having its wetter months.

Cultural Triangle and hill country

Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and the tea country can be visited most of the year. Rain often comes as short afternoon showers rather than all-day washouts, so a private driver can plan around it.

How we plan around the weather

Because the island is compact, a private driver can shift your route toward the drier coast for your travel dates. Tell us your month and we will suggest which regions to prioritise.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is overall best for Sri Lanka?

For the classic west-and-south-coast plus hill-country trip, December to March is the driest, sunniest window. For the east coast and Arugam Bay surf, aim for May to September.

Does it rain all day during monsoon?

Often not. Monsoon rain frequently arrives as heavy afternoon showers that pass, especially inland, so a flexible private itinerary can still work well.
