Mirissa is a small crescent beach on Sri Lanka's south coast, famous for blue whale watching from November to April and for Coconut Tree Hill, one of the country's most photographed viewpoints. The beach is a 200-metre curve of palm-fringed sand with a headland at each end. Whale-watching boats leave at 6am; a good private operator costs USD 45-60 per person. The Southern Expressway puts Mirissa about 3 hours from Colombo Airport.
Why go to Mirissa
Mirissa is the south coast's classic beach stop and one of the world's best places to see blue whales - November to April sightings are close to routine on a well-run boat. Beyond the whales, Coconut Tree Hill, calm swimming and a lively-but-not-loud beach-bar scene make it the natural finish to most itineraries.
Best things to do in Mirissa
- Dawn whale watching (November to April) - blue whales and sperm whales, sometimes fin whales and pods of spinner dolphins. Book a responsible operator, take motion-sickness tablets, dress warm for the boat.
- Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise - the classic photograph. Ten minutes walk from the beach; a small fee to the caretaker.
- Swim and paddle - the bay is calm and safe for most swimmers.
- Surf lesson at Weligama (10 minutes east) - the best beginner beach on the island.
- Snorkelling at Polhena Reef (15 minutes east) - turtles regularly seen.
- Sunset at Parrot Rock (walkable at low tide from the beach).
- Stilt fishermen at Koggala (20 minutes west) - mostly staged for tourists these days but photogenic.
