How do I book a driver or tour with HireATourDriver.lk?
Message us on WhatsApp with your dates, group size and rough plan. We reply usually within an hour with a written quote and suggested route. A small deposit (typically 20 percent) confirms your booking. No obligation for a quote.
How much does a private driver cost in Sri Lanka?
A car with English-speaking driver costs USD 50-80 per day; a van seating 6-8 costs USD 70-110. This includes fuel, expressway tolls, parking, driver meals and driver accommodation on multi-day trips. Site entrance fees are separate.
Do I need a private driver in Sri Lanka?
Highly recommended if you are visiting multiple regions. Attractions are spread across the island, roads are slow (~40 km/h average), signage is inconsistent, and self-driving requires a temporary permit. A private driver lets you stop where you like, adjust your plan, and travel comfortably.
What vehicles do you have?
Sedans (Prius, Axio, Allion) for couples; vans (Toyota KDH, Nissan) for families and groups; luxury SUVs (Prado, Land Cruiser, Montero, Vezel) for premium tours; mini and large buses for larger groups. All air-conditioned, insured, driven by English-speaking chauffeurs.
Can you also arrange hotels?
Yes. From boutique guesthouses to luxury beach resorts, we book at competitive rates as part of your trip. Say your budget per night and any preferences (beach, tea bungalow, family room) when you plan.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to March: driest window for the west and south coasts and the hill country. May to September: best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla) is good year-round. Two monsoons - somewhere is always in season.
Is it safe to travel with your drivers?
Yes. Every driver is vetted, experienced, and reference-checked. Vehicles are serviced regularly, insured, and fitted with functional seat belts. Our office is on WhatsApp throughout your trip for anything that needs attention.

Good to know
How do I meet my private driver at Colombo airport (CMB)?
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name-board showing your name (or ours) as soon as your flight lands. If flights are early, they will be there early; if delayed, they track your flight and wait at no extra cost. Share your flight number and WhatsApp contact when you book. Meet-and-greet is included in every airport transfer at no additional charge.
What happens if my flight arrives early?
No problem. We track your flight arrival time using publicly available flight-status feeds, and your driver is at Bandaranaike International (CMB) arrivals hall before your plane lands. If you clear immigration and baggage faster than expected, walk out to the meet-and-greet area with your driver holding a name board. No waiting, no extra charges for early arrivals.
What if my flight is significantly delayed?
Your driver is notified automatically through the flight-tracking system and adjusts arrival time. You are not charged for wait time on delayed flights. If communication is disrupted (no wifi, dead phone), the driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. WhatsApp us on landing if you can; otherwise, just walk out and find your driver.
What if I am not satisfied with my driver or vehicle - can you replace them?
Yes. If you are genuinely unhappy with your driver or vehicle for reasonable cause (safety, communication, cleanliness, professionalism), contact us on WhatsApp immediately and we arrange a replacement at the next practical location. Most concerns are resolved with a quick conversation, but we do not lock you into an unsuitable driver for a multi-day tour.
Will you share driver details before I arrive in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Once your booking is confirmed we send your driver name, photo, vehicle type, registration plate and direct WhatsApp contact - usually 24 to 48 hours before pickup. You can message your driver in advance to introduce yourself, confirm pickup timing, and share any preferences before the trip starts.
Will my driver force me into tourist traps or commission shops?
No. Our chauffeurs are paid transparent salaries and do not need commission stops. If you want to visit a specific gem shop, spice garden, or workshop, we take you - but we never divert your itinerary to places you did not request. Say clearly if you want to skip a stop, and your driver moves on. Your itinerary is yours.
Will my tour itinerary be flexible?
Completely flexible. Nothing is locked in. You can add stops, skip planned places, extend a night somewhere you love, or shift a day around based on weather - just tell your driver. The trip we propose before you arrive is a strong starting plan, not a fixed script. Real-time adjustments are what a private driver makes possible.
Are parking, expressway tolls, and entry fees included?
Fuel, expressway tolls, and parking are included in the per-day driver rate. Site entrance fees (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Yala safari jeep, tea factory tours, temple donations) are NOT included and paid separately by you at each site. Our attraction price list shows current entrance fees so you can budget accurately. Ask for a written inclusions/exclusions sheet with your quote.
Are drivers respectful of privacy during the trip?
Yes. Your driver waits outside the vehicle or in the drivers area during your sightseeing, meals, and hotel time. They do not share your itinerary, photos, or personal details with anyone. If you prefer a quieter drive, just say so and your driver keeps conversation to essentials.
Is my driver also a licensed tour guide?
Our chauffeurs are experienced local drivers with strong knowledge of Sri Lanka - not government-licensed national guides. They share local context, history, and practical tips during drives. For deep guided experiences at Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, or Polonnaruwa we can arrange a licensed site-guide who joins you at the entrance for an extra fee. Say so when you plan your itinerary.
Will my driver chat during the ride or stay quiet?
That is your choice. Our drivers are friendly and share what they see along the way, but they read the room. If you want a quiet drive, tell them once and they respect it. Many travelers enjoy the conversation - our drivers know the country deeply and the stories add a lot. Silence when you want silence.
Will the driver use their phone while driving?
No hands-on phone use while driving - that is a firm rule. Drivers use hands-free calls and pull over safely for messaging. If you ever feel uncomfortable with anything happening in the vehicle (phone use, speed, tiredness), tell your driver directly or WhatsApp us and we address it right away.
Can I get a proper invoice or receipt for my payment?
Yes. We issue a written invoice on request - useful for corporate travel reimbursement, tax claims, or your own records. Ask for the invoice format you need (PDF, printed, with company details) when you pay the final balance. All charges match your original written quote.
What is the payment policy?
A small deposit confirms your booking (typically 20 percent). The balance is paid to your driver at the end of the tour, in cash (USD, EUR, GBP, or LKR) or by card on request. No hidden charges: the quote you accept is the total price. Deposit is transferable and refundable per our cancellation policy.
Are baby or child seats available?
Yes - child car seats and booster seats can be arranged in advance. Tell us the child's age and weight when you book so we bring the right seat. Sri Lankan cars are not always equipped with rear child-seat anchors, so we use lap-belt-mounted seats where needed. No extra charge for one seat; multiple seats may carry a small fee.
Do vehicles have proper seat belts and are they clean?
Yes. Every vehicle in our fleet has working seat belts for all passengers (required by Sri Lankan law). Cars are washed and vacuumed between trips, air-conditioning is tested, and mechanical servicing is scheduled to keep vehicles reliable. If anything is not up to standard when you meet the vehicle, tell us on WhatsApp before you set off.
Can I charge my phone in the vehicle?
Yes. Most vehicles have USB charging ports or a 12V socket where you can plug in your own charger. If you need a specific cable type (USB-C, Lightning), bring your own or ask your driver in advance. Long drives are the perfect time to top up.
Can I eat and drink in the vehicle?
Yes, within reason. Water, snacks, and light meals are fine - please avoid strongly-smelling foods or anything that stains fabric seats. Drivers usually stop at good local restaurants along the route (their recommendations are excellent). Bottled water is often provided at pickup.
How many hours per day will my driver work?
A standard touring day is roughly 10 hours (typically 8am to 6pm), which comfortably covers a normal itinerary between two destinations. Longer days are possible on request - overtime is charged transparently. Very late departures or all-night driving are usually not recommended for safety reasons but can be arranged for airport transfers.
Do vehicles have on-board entertainment?
Most vehicles have Bluetooth so you can play your own music through the vehicle speakers. Larger vans and buses often have USB ports for phone charging. Streaming video is possible if you have a data-enabled SIM. Sri Lankan roads are scenic enough that most travelers prefer to just look out the window.
What if there is a problem during my trip and my driver cannot help?
Our office team is available 24/7 on WhatsApp during your trip. Save the office number in your phone before you arrive. For anything the driver cannot solve (a hotel dispute, a health issue, a missed flight, a lost passport), message the office and we help arrange a solution. Real support is not just at booking - it is throughout your trip.
How do I confirm my tour?
Send us your dates, group size, arrival flight, and rough plan on WhatsApp. We reply with a written quote and suggested itinerary. When you accept, we send a booking confirmation and payment details for the deposit. Once the deposit is received, your booking is confirmed and driver details are sent 24-48 hours before pickup.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations more than 14 days before your tour: full deposit refund. 7-14 days before: 50 percent deposit refund. Less than 7 days: deposit non-refundable but can be transferred to a rescheduled trip within 12 months. If we cancel for any reason (weather, safety, illness), you get a full refund. See the cancellation policy page for details.
How much should I tip my driver?
Tipping is not obligatory but is appreciated. For a multi-day tour, USD 10-15 per day for the driver is standard. For airport transfers, USD 2-5. If your driver did something exceptional (early starts, safari expertise, kids handled brilliantly), a higher tip is welcomed. Tips are handed to your driver directly in cash, in any convertible currency.
What is included in the driver package price?
Included: fuel, expressway tolls, all parking, driver's meals and accommodation on multi-day trips, air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking chauffeur, vehicle insurance, meet-and-greet at CMB airport, WhatsApp support throughout your trip, all applicable taxes.
What is NOT included in the driver package price?
Not included: your own accommodation, your own meals, site entrance fees (Sigiriya, safari jeep hires, tea factory tours, temples), personal shopping, alcohol, tips for driver, optional extras (child seat if needed for more than one child, licensed site-guides, private boat charters). Your written quote lists exactly what is and is not included so there are no surprises.
Can I contact you before booking if I have a specific question?
Yes - we prefer it. Message us on WhatsApp with your specific situation (a wheelchair-user in your group, a very early flight, a specific religious dietary requirement, a special-interest tour like bird-watching or diving) and we plan around it before you commit. No pressure, no obligation.
Trip planning
Is 7 days enough to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, seven days is enough for Sri Lanka's highlights: the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla), Kandy, hill country around Ella, a Yala safari and the south coast around Galle. A private driver is the best way to link them, because attractions sit in different regions and public transport is slow. Ten days lets you slow down; fourteen covers the full island.
What are the top places to visit in Sri Lanka?
The essential Sri Lanka circuit is Sigiriya (Lion Rock fortress), Dambulla (cave temples), Kandy (Temple of the Tooth), Nuwara Eliya and Ella (tea country and Nine Arches Bridge), Yala (leopard safari), Galle (Dutch fort) and Mirissa (whale watching). First-timers with 7-10 days should focus on this loop. Add Trincomalee or Arugam Bay for the east coast, or Jaffna for the north.
Sigiriya or Pidurangala - which rock should I climb?
Climb both if you can. Sigiriya (USD 30 entry) is the UNESCO-listed rock fortress with frescoes, water gardens and Lion's Paw entrance - historically and visually unmatched. Pidurangala (USD 3 entry) is the neighbouring rock; the summit gives the best view of Sigiriya itself, especially at sunrise. Do Pidurangala at 5 am, then Sigiriya from 10 am when the tour groups have left.
Your private driver
Do I need a private driver in Sri Lanka?
A private driver is highly recommended if you plan to visit multiple regions. Attractions are spread across the island, roads are slow (average 40 km/h), signage is inconsistent and self-driving requires a temporary Sri Lankan permit. A private driver lets you stop where you like, adjust your plan mid-trip, travel comfortably in the heat and get local guidance for around USD 50-80 per day including fuel and driver food/accommodation.
How do I get from Colombo airport (CMB) to my hotel?
The fastest and safest option is a pre-booked private transfer. Bandaranaike International (CMB) is 35 km from Colombo (around 45 minutes on the expressway) and 90 km from Kandy (3 hours). A private car costs about USD 25-40 to Colombo hotels and USD 60-80 to Kandy - your driver waits inside with a name board, helps with bags, and includes tolls. Taxis from the rank are cheaper but less reliable at night.
How do I take the Kandy to Ella train?
The Kandy to Ella train (around 7 hours) is one of the world's most scenic rail journeys - through tea plantations, waterfalls and highland villages. Book reserved 2nd or 1st class online at 12go.asia or ExpRail up to 30 days ahead; 3rd class is unreserved and lets you stand at the open doors. Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) or Ella are the usual endpoints. Your driver can drop you at Kandy station and meet you again.
How long does it take to drive from Colombo to Kandy?
The drive from Colombo to Kandy is about 115 km and takes 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic. The route via the E01 expressway to Kadugannawa is fastest; the older road through Kegalle is scenic and slower. From Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) direct to Kandy is 3 to 3.5 hours. A private car costs USD 60-90; the train takes 2.5-3 hours but requires transfers to your hotel.
Which side of the road do you drive in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka drives on the left, like the UK, India and Australia. Roads are narrow, traffic is chaotic in cities, and tuk-tuks weave unpredictably. Self-driving requires a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit (based on an International Driving Permit) and is not recommended for most visitors. A private driver is the safest and most relaxed option - you sit back, they handle the roads.
When to visit
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons so somewhere is always in season. December to March is the driest, sunniest window for the west and south coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota) and the hill country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya). May to September suits the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa) is good most of the year.

What currency does Sri Lanka use and can I pay with card?
Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets and shopping malls in Colombo, Kandy and Galle. Rural areas, small guesthouses, tuk-tuks and market stalls are cash-only. Bring USD or EUR to change at the airport or a bank; ATMs are widely available in towns. Basics
Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka. Apply on the official government portal (eta.gov.lk) - it is normally issued within 24-72 hours and valid for a 30-day tourist stay, extendable in Colombo. Costs and processing time depend on your nationality. Always check the current rules on the official site before booking flights.
Is Sri Lanka safe for tourists?
Sri Lanka is generally very safe for tourists, with low violent-crime rates and welcoming locals. Sensible precautions apply: keep valuables secure, use metered or booked transport at night, respect temple dress codes, and follow local advice near wildlife and monsoon-swelled rivers. Solo female travelers report Sri Lanka as one of the friendlier South Asian destinations. Check your government's current travel advisory before you go.
What is Sri Lankan food like and are vegetarian and halal options easy to find?
Sri Lankan food is rice-and-curry based, coconut-rich and often spicier than Indian food. Signature dishes include hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), kottu roti and fish ambul thiyal. Vegetarian and vegan options are everywhere - traditional meals are largely plant-based. Halal restaurants are common in Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Nuwara Eliya; ask your driver for recommendations. Water: drink bottled or filtered.
What is Sri Lanka's main airport?
Bandaranaike International Airport (code CMB) near Negombo is Sri Lanka's main international gateway, about 35 km north of Colombo. Mattala Rajapaksa International (HRI) in the south is smaller and handles limited flights. Colombo has direct connections to Middle East hubs, Indian and Southeast Asian cities, and increasingly to European capitals. Immigration usually clears in 30-45 minutes at peak times.
Should I get a SIM card in Sri Lanka?
Yes - a local SIM is cheap and reliable. Dialog and Mobitel are the main operators; buy one at Bandaranaike Airport arrivals or at any dealer in town. A tourist package with 10-20 GB of data and calls costs around USD 5-10 for a month. 4G coverage is strong on the west, south and hill country routes; patchier in national parks. Passport required to activate.
What should I pack for Sri Lanka?
Pack light, breathable clothes for the coast and warmer layers for the hills (nights in Nuwara Eliya can drop to 10 C). Cover shoulders and knees for temples - a light scarf helps. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a reusable water bottle, sturdy sandals or trainers for Sigiriya's steps, and a small first-aid kit. Adaptor: Type G / D / M plugs, 230 V.
Do people in Sri Lanka speak English?
English is widely spoken across Sri Lanka's tourism industry - drivers, hotel staff, guides, safari jeep operators and restaurant staff typically communicate well in English. Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages. In rural areas English drops off, but tourism-facing services (which is what you'll interact with as a visitor) are consistently English-capable. All our chauffeur-guides speak English.
Wildlife
Yala or Udawalawe - which safari is better?
Yala has Sri Lanka's highest leopard density and diverse landscape but is busier and more expensive. Udawalawe almost guarantees wild elephant sightings, is quieter, and works well as a shorter or family safari. Wildlife photographers and leopard hunters pick Yala; families and travelers wanting a calmer experience pick Udawalawe. Both are open year-round; morning safaris are best for wildlife activity.
When and where can I see whales in Sri Lanka?
Mirissa (south coast) offers blue and sperm whale watching from November to April - Sri Lanka is one of the world's best places to see blue whales. Trincomalee (east coast) has a shorter season from May to September. Book a licensed operator (departures at dawn), take motion-sickness tablets, and consider a slower "responsible whale watching" trip that keeps a proper distance from the animals.
Who
Is Sri Lanka good for family travel with kids?
Sri Lanka is excellent for families: short driving distances, elephants and wildlife, calm south-coast beaches (Bentota, Tangalle), scenic trains, low-key surf schools and family-friendly hotels. Book a private van with a driver so you can adjust the pace, stop for food, and keep car seats in place. Younger kids do well on 7-10 day itineraries; teens can handle 14 days with mixed activities.
Is Sri Lanka good for a honeymoon?
Sri Lanka is a strong honeymoon choice - short flights from Europe, the Middle East and India; boutique tea-bungalow stays; sunset south-coast beaches; and blue-whale watching from Mirissa. Ten days is the sweet spot: two nights in the Cultural Triangle, two or three in the hills, one on a scenic train, and the rest on the south coast. Private drivers make it effortless.
Compare
Sri Lanka or Maldives - which is better?
Maldives is all-inclusive resorts and reef diving on private islands; Sri Lanka is a full country with history, wildlife, mountains, tea estates and beaches. Choose Maldives for a pure beach holiday; choose Sri Lanka for variety, culture and value. Many travelers combine both - a week exploring Sri Lanka followed by a few days on a Maldives resort, thanks to the short flight between them.
Sri Lanka or Thailand - which should I visit?
Thailand is bigger, has more nightlife, cheaper flights from most origins, and better beaches for pure resort holidays. Sri Lanka is more compact (you see more in less time), has stronger cultural depth (ancient cities, tea heritage), better wildlife (leopards, blue whales, wild elephants), and feels less crowded. First-time Southeast Asia: Thailand. Culture, wildlife and calm: Sri Lanka.
