Why go to Dambulla

Dambulla is the most-photographed cave temple in Sri Lanka - the golden Buddha over the entrance and the painted-ceiling caves inside are genuinely striking. The site has been a continuous place of worship for 22 centuries, which is easy to feel once you are inside. Almost every Cultural Triangle itinerary includes it.

Best things to do in Dambulla

  1. Visit the five caves in sequence - Cave 2 (Maharaja Vihara) is the largest and most elaborate.
  2. Note the painted ceilings - the paintings are 18th-century restorations of much older work.
  3. Climb up in the morning while it is cooler; the stone stairs get hot by midday.
  4. Combine with Sigiriya (20 minutes away) - either Dambulla in the afternoon then Sigiriya at dawn the next day, or the reverse.
  5. The Dambulla wholesale vegetable market (5am) is a genuinely local morning experience if you are up.
