Head to head
Sigiriya vs Pidurangala: Which Rock Should You Climb?
Both, in that order (Pidurangala at sunset, Sigiriya at dawn). If only one: Sigiriya for the site itself, Pidurangala for the view of Sigiriya.
Do both. Sigiriya (USD 30) is the UNESCO World Heritage rock fortress with the frescoes, water gardens and 5th-century palace ruins - historically and visually unmatched. Pidurangala (USD 3) is the neighbouring rock; the summit gives the best view of Sigiriya itself. The right sequence is Pidurangala at sunset, then Sigiriya at 7am opening the next morning. Doing only one: Sigiriya for history, Pidurangala for the photograph.

Good to know
Sri Lanka vs Pidurangala - common questions
Is Sigiriya or Pidurangala better?
Different. Sigiriya is the historical site with the frescoes, water gardens and palace ruins. Pidurangala gives the best photographic view of Sigiriya itself. Doing both, with Pidurangala at sunset and Sigiriya at dawn, is the right answer for most visitors.
How much does Pidurangala cost?
USD 3 per person, paid at the small ticket office at the base. Modest dress required as it passes a Buddhist monastery on the way up. Bring cash - card facilities are unreliable.
Is Pidurangala harder than Sigiriya?
Yes, at the very top. Sigiriya has metal staircases and railings the whole way; Pidurangala's final section is an unassisted scramble over large boulders. Neither is technical, but Pidurangala catches out visitors who assume it is a fee-free version of the same climb.
Can you see Sigiriya from Pidurangala for free?
You need to pay the Pidurangala entrance fee (USD 3) to reach the viewpoint. This is far below the Sigiriya fee (USD 30), but it is not free. The USD 3 buys the best view of Sigiriya that exists.
Which should I do first, Sigiriya or Pidurangala?
Pidurangala first, at sunset, then Sigiriya at 7am the next morning. Doing them in this order makes the whole area click - you see Sigiriya from a distance first, then experience it up close.
