1. Direct local operator
How it works: you message a Sri Lanka-based driver company (us, or any similar outfit), they quote you directly, you book directly, their driver turns up.
Who it suits: multi-day trips, travellers who want flexibility, repeat visitors, anyone who wants to keep the same driver for the whole trip.
Typical cost: USD 50-80 per day for sedan, USD 70-110 for van, fuel and driver meals included.
Trade-off: you need to vet the operator yourself. Look for a registered Sri Lanka business, real Google reviews under their own name, and a no-deposit quote policy.
2. International aggregator / OTA
How it works: you book through a platform (GetYourGuide, Viator, Klook, large booking sites), the platform resells a local driver and takes a cut.
Who it suits: first-time visitors who want the comfort of a familiar checkout and buyer protection from a brand they recognise.
Typical cost: 15-25% higher than booking the same driver direct. Your driver is also earning less than they would on a direct booking.
Trade-off: if something changes mid-trip, you are routing support through a platform in another country rather than directly to the driver.
3. Ride-hail app
How it works: PickMe is Sri Lanka\'s dominant ride-hail app. Uber works in Colombo. You open the app, request a car, pay per ride.
Who it suits: single legs inside Colombo, short airport hops, nights out, travellers on a very tight budget who do not need English and are not travelling with much luggage.
Typical cost: LKR 300-800 for inner-city rides, LKR 3,500-5,000 for CMB airport to Colombo. Surge pricing at peak times.
Trade-off: you cannot pre-book a specific driver, you cannot keep the same vehicle across days, pricing is not fixed in advance, and the driver is unlikely to speak detailed tourism English.
4. Packaged tour from a home-country agent
How it works: you book a complete 7, 10 or 14 day Sri Lanka tour with your local travel agent at home. They include flights, hotels, driver and some meals in one price.
Who it suits: travellers who want zero planning and are happy with the pace, hotels and route the agent has chosen.
Typical cost: highest of the four options, often 30-60% more than booking the components separately.
Trade-off: you commit to the agent\'s route before you arrive. Mid-trip changes are usually not possible without surcharges.
