Sri Lanka month by month
Sri Lanka in May: Weather, Crowds, Costs and Where to Go.
The flip. Southwest monsoon arrives; the east coast opens for its season.
May marks the arrival of the southwest (Yala) monsoon, which brings rain to Sri Lanka's west coast, south coast and hill country. At the same time the east coast - Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay - begins its dry season. May is therefore an excellent month if you reroute east, and a poor one if you insist on Galle and Mirissa. Rates drop sharply across the southwest.
Is May a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
The flip. Southwest monsoon arrives; the east coast opens for its season. Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite coasts, so the question is never whether to come - it is which side of the island to be on. In May, here is how that breaks down.
Best for
- East coast beaches (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda)
- Arugam Bay surf season opening
- Wilpattu safari
- Budget travel - low-season rates
- Cultural Triangle (between showers)
Better to avoid
- South coast beaches - rough sea and rain
- Mirissa whale watching - season over
- Hill-country hiking - misty and wet

Festivals and events in May
Sri Lanka’s biggest festivals follow the lunar calendar, so exact dates shift year to year. Every full moon (Poya) is a public holiday, and alcohol is not sold on those days.
- Vesak Poya, the most important Buddhist festival - lanterns, illuminated pandals and free food stalls (dansal) island-wide
- Vesak is a national holiday with alcohol restrictions
Practical tips for travelling in May
- Vesak is spectacular: whole towns light up with handmade lanterns and roadside dansal give away free food. Worth planning around.
- Reroute east: a May itinerary should read Sigiriya, Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay - not Galle and Mirissa.
- Low-season rates in the southwest can be 30-50 percent below January levels if you accept the rain.
- Arugam Bay surf season opens - the right-hand point break starts working consistently.
- Alcohol is not sold on Poya (full moon) days; hotels may serve residents only.

Getting around Sri Lanka in May
Distances in Sri Lanka are short but slow - average road speed is around 40 km/h. In wetter months that drops further, and afternoon storms can close hill-country roads briefly. A private driver matters most in the changeable months because the itinerary can be reordered the same morning. Fuel, expressway tolls, parking and the driver’s own meals and accommodation are all included in the daily rate - see what a private driver actually costs.
