What to Pack for Sri Lanka
A simple, practical packing guide for Sri Lanka's mix of hot coasts, cool hills and temple visits.
Pack light, breathable clothing for the heat, but add a light jacket or fleece for the cool hill country and early safari mornings. Bring modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable shoes, and any personal medicines. A reusable water bottle and a light rain layer are useful year-round.
For the heat and coast
Light, breathable cotton or linen, swimwear, sunglasses, a hat and strong sun protection. The lowlands and beaches are warm and humid most of the year.
For the hills and safaris
The tea country and early-morning safaris can be cool, so pack a light jacket or fleece and long trousers. Evenings at altitude feel noticeably fresher.
For temples
Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees, plus slip-on shoes you can remove easily at religious sites. A light scarf is handy as a cover-up.
Practical extras
Insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, a small first-aid kit with personal medicines, a universal adapter and a light rain layer. Your driver can stop for anything you forget.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to dress modestly everywhere?
Beaches and hotels are relaxed, but temples and rural areas call for covered shoulders and knees. Carrying a light cover-up makes it easy.
Should I pack for rain?
A light, packable rain layer is worth having year-round, since showers can pass through even in the drier season.
