Diyaluma Falls: How to Get There, When to Go and What to Expect
Sri Lanka's second-tallest waterfall, the upper pools everyone comes for, and the only way to reach them without a hard hike.
Diyaluma Falls is Sri Lanka's second-tallest waterfall at 220 metres, located near Koslanda in Badulla district between Ella and Haputale. The famous Instagram shots are from the upper natural pools reached by a 45-minute uphill walk from Poonagala village. Visit between May and September for stronger water flow. A private driver from Ella (90 minutes) can wait while you walk up and swim.
Where it is and how to get there
Diyaluma sits off the A4 road between Beragala and Wellawaya, 15 kilometres from Haputale. Public transport is awkward; a private driver from Ella takes about 90 minutes.
Lower view vs upper pools
Most tour buses stop at the base viewpoint for ten minutes. The reward is the upper pools - a chain of natural infinity pools above the main drop. Reach them by driving up to Poonagala and walking 45 minutes.
When to go
May to September has the strongest flow and the clearest skies. Dry-season (December to March) water flow is lower but the pools still work for swimming.
